Prior to Your Behaviour Consultation

*if you have any additional or alternative needs please do let us know so we can adapt to work together with the best success possible.

Pre-Consultation Questionnaire

Part of the initial assessment process is to complete a questionnaire which will give me basic information about your pet. The issues you’re having, your goals, and brief information about their social behaviour, diet, house rules and so on. We’ll also expand on some of these areas in the behaviour consultation.

Pre-Consultation Videos

You are also encouraged to send in any videos that you already have of the issue(s) prior to the behaviour consultation. This is not absolutely necessary, and if the issues involve aggression we would encourage you not to put your pet, or others, in a potentially risky situation in order to obtain video footage. In these cases we will delve into body language handouts and your descriptions.

In any case a range of short 20-30 video clips of your dog’s normal routine can be helpful to build a picture of their normal lives and behavioural approaches. For example a video of them getting ready to go for a walk, on a walk, having their breakfast, doing some training, playing a game with you and others in the household, interacting with other pets in the household, a tour of the house and garden, the problem behaviour if safe and appropriate.

Veterinary Referral

Another aspect is a veterinary referral form; this needs to be completed by your vet. Lots of behaviour issues can be set off or maintained by different medical conditions. Having a discussion with your vet and a thorough check up and relevant investigations are important. The vet referral confirms that at least on initial examination it seems most likely that either the symptoms are purely behavioural. Or it may that behaviour input is going to be a beneficial step alongside appropriate medical treatment.

It also means that I have your vets details to send them a summary following the behaviour consultation. This keeps them in the loop, and I check back in with them as needed to update them on progress. I may ask for further support in case further investigations may be indicated, or for the use of behaviour medication in some cases.

You can read more about the vet referral process here.

You’ll also receive Terms and Conditions, which I will assume you have agreed to upon commencing our work together.

The Behaviour Consultation

The initial behaviour consultation starts with a more in depth getting to know you session. After the initial hellos (and unmutings if we’re on Zoom!) we’ll tend to have a chat about how you are feeling about the issues you’re experiencing with your pet. This gives you a chance to start to explain in more detail what’s happening. We’ll talk about the practical and emotional impact that’s having on everyone. We will revisit this throughout the session as we cover more areas and get to know each other better.

This starting point will often naturally move into discussing what you know of their life before coming to you. A discussion around their experiences and behaviour throughout their time with you will be important. As is building a timeline of events, discussing triggers and going over videos you’ve sent in. We’ll take a look at some body language handouts to see what you recognise. All of this will help us to decide how your pet is feeling, as well as your priorities. That means we can move on to talking about what we’re aiming to achieve and setting out the foundational steps to get there. We’ll talk about how to get some quick wins where possible, stop your pet from rehearsing unwanted behaviour as well as establish the stepping stones for medium and longer term training.

How long does it take?

I ask people to set aside two hours for this process so we don’t have to rush. I want you to have the time to share everything you think is relevant as well as concerns you have. It is important that we have time to talk through our foundation steps and you feel happy with our plan. You know your pet better than anyone and are a crucial part of the behaviour plan creation.

Following the behaviour consultation

I will write up a report summarising the main areas we discussed during the behaviour consultation. This means you have something to read back over as a reminder of what you’re working on. These tend to be sent out within 2 working days of the consultation. I will also send you any additional handouts and videos as an aid to the training plan. Your vet will get a simplified summary of our session so that they know that I have followed up on their referral, and to keep them in the loop in terms of our training plan and provide an open channel for communication as needed.

You can also start to send over questions and videos to our private WhatsApp group if you’ve opted for that level of support. I check WhatsApp at least daily Mon-Fri between 9:00 – 17:00

Follow Up Sessions

After the initial behaviour consultation will be the follow up. Depending on your chosen package you will have at least one follow up session so that we can check in, make sure things are moving in the right direction and add further training steps as needed. As with any in-person sessions, in person follow ups may be subject to additional travel fees.

Behaviour Basics packages, for more straightforward issues, has one further follow up session with no support between sessions. The follow up session tends to be 2-3 weeks following the initial consultation, depending on the tasks we’ve set. This second session will last up to one hour and I will send further notes summarising the next steps we’ve discussed for you to work on.

Advanced Support Packages include two follow up sessions, usually 2-3 weeks apart, plus a private WhatsApp chat so that you can send in questions, updates and training videos between sessions. This means we can be in close contact to make sure that you aren’t left uncertain, and if things aren’t going as planned we can course correct quickly. You can also send in additional videos for continued assessment.

The Separation Anxiety Package includes 30 minute check ins as part of the four and eight week course, WhatsApp support between sessions as described above, and the shared document with daily training tasks.

Further follow up sessions can then be added as needed so you always have the support you need, when you need it. Follow up sessions can be 30 or 60 minutes if online, or 60 minutes only if in person.

Real-Time Online Sessions

Video calls have swept the world as the latest way to keep in touch. They are a great way of scheduling behaviour consultations and check-ups with real-time support and advice with more flexibility, less wait time and no travel fee.

I can meet you and your family, observe your pets and feedback on your training. Virtual sessions are just as effective and efficient for conducting in-home training. Me being there can be distracting for some pets, or cause others to feel stressed and not act normally. In many cases, working together online can be much more effective and efficient as a result.

By watching from behind a screen I can see your pet exactly as you do!

Ruby look-alike dog, anxiety training
Thankyou so much Naomi for the help you gave me with Ruby she is a completley different dog now,
I was referred to Naomi through my vets as my then 7 month old staffy cross was suffering from anxiety and was scared of anybody and anything. She would constantly bark at people who tried to stroke her and back away as soon as there hand went to her,
She was scared of any little noise she heard.  With the help from Naomi through online contact ( which was absolutely fine to do it this way ).  She is transformed, with simple training tips and patience along side confidence building activities she now will not only allow people to fuss her, but she is so excited to be fussed by others, there are still a few she is wary of ( the post man for one ). But she as come such a long way in a few months, the confident building activities are great for her.
I highly recommend Naomi to anybody that needs help with there pets, she is so nice and friendly and really understands, and with the online virtual meetings you can work around days and times to suit.
You can upload any videos you want her to see and she will get back to you.
Always there for advice when you need it. Thankyou Naomi  for all your help.
